The Amazing Mobile Landscape

As part of our study of the landscape and the conceptual nature of art, we have dug deep into the past of the Pre-Renaissance and connected it with the nature arts of China and Japan.  In this vein we have created a mobile landscape diorama and will use it to extrapolate a larger world in paintings and drawings.

Here are some images from the landscape:

Special thanks to Beth Bursuck.  We'll clean your wagon up as good as new!

Noble Student Accepted to Prestigious Summer Program in Italy

Noble Academy junior and studio art student Caitlin Greene has been accepted to the Maryland Institute College of Art summer program in Tuscany.  The description of the program from the MICA website states that:

This 2-credit experience focuses on Drawing and Painting the Tuscan Landscape in the Monte Amiata region of Tuscany. Located in Italy's Province of Grosseto, the Monte Amiata region is a visually stunning location, boasting a beautifully diverse landscape of valleys and foothills dotted with medieval hamlets. Drawing and Painting the Tuscan Landscape, a course individualized to each student's experience, allows students to work in a variety of materials with an emphasis on acrylic painting. Students will learn about art in the birthplace of the Renaissance and enjoy field trips to Florence and other cultural venues to explore classical and contemporary art. Student lodging is in Le Puscine, a former poderina (small farm) near Montelaterone.

Caitlin has been a student at Noble since her 9th grade year and is hoping to attend MICA after she graduates next year.

Photojournalism is Fun!

Posted by Picasa

Noble Academy senior and yearbook sports photographer had this photo printed on the front page of the Kernersville Tuesday News today.  This is the second day of his senior internship with the paper, so I can only assume they are happy with his work!  You can see more of Keith's photos in the yearbook, which will go on sale soon!

Intermediate Art

Check out what we have been doing in intermediate art!

SECCA and START

It has been a busy week here in the High School art department.  We are currently considering a growing art movement in America called New Contemporary or Street Art.  Influenced by pop culture, graffiti and social protest; Street Art is coming into the gallery.  The question I want the students to consider: is something lost when this work finds a safe and established place in the art world?  Is anything gained.

To explore this we visited the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem.  Curator Steven Matijcio was kind enough to give us a personal tour of the show and talk about some of the issues raised by the artists.  You can read my review of the show on the ncartblog, as well as see a short video of one of our students, Jared Lindsay, interacting with one of the pieces (with the curator's consent!) here:

We also visited the START gallery, the student art gallery of Wake Forest, to see a small show by students in the sculpture fabrication class.  It was an opportunity to see the work of creative individuals only a few years ahead of our students.
